Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the six related Nippon Inu (Japanese Dogs) and the Akita is the largest. The ancestors of those little dogs are believed to be the oldest, as skeletal remains have been found dating back to 8000 B.C. The Shiba Inu were originally bred for hunting. They were used on small game, and some Shiba have been used to hunt Boar, Deer, and Bear. Their Fox like look, cat like cleanliness, courageous, dignified and obedient way are what endeared them to the Japanese. Shibas thrive in hot as well as cold weather and enjoy snow and/or sunshine. They're just as happy living inside your home as they are living outdoors. They thrive on human attention and affection and attention but also cherish their own privacy and solitude at times. They are one of the most adaptable breeds in existance. They aren't hyper or noisy like many other small breeds. They rarely bark unless it is for a good reason. Colors are red, red sesame, black and tan. They stand 14-16 inches at the shoulder, and weigh 18-23 pounds. Their ears naturally stand up, (slightly tilted forward), and tail is curled (from a tight circle to a sickle shape) over their back. Along with their short coat, this all makes them an all around dog. They are so intelligent you only have to show them once or twice what it is you want them to do and they obey. Housetraining can be accomplished with little effort in less than a week. This proud little dog is a joy to own and it is a dog anyone from little children to senior citizens can handle.
